Medicine

The advances made in medicine over the last 50 years are amazing. Medications can now fix diseases that used to cause death; surgery is no longer the first option. Patients used to stay for days in the hospital after surgery, now they stay hours. Advances are good but there are always limitations. The limitations are the hard thing to deal with. Cancer care has gone a long way, but still there is no cure. Heart care has taken leaps and bounds, but still people die of heart attacks. Head injuries can be fixed with a 'simple' surgery, but not all head injuries. The hard job we have is seeing one surgery work for someone and not work for someone else. How does that happen? How is it fair for one person to live and another to die? Trying to find the meaning is impossible, it becomes harder to believe in medicine. The knowledge that everything possible was done is a small consolation.
